Day 8 & 9 – BURN: Circuit 1 & Rest

Yesterday (Monday) I went to Sport Chalet hoping to pick up a pair of 10 lbs, 15 lbs and 20 lbs dumb bells. The total would have been $150! Yikes. So I checked out the odd brand of adjustables they had and talked to an employee that was stocking nearby. I ended up trying the threaded dumb bell bars with a pair of 2.5s, 10s and he brought me four 5s… $70, not bad. Well, after dinner and entertaining the children (my niece and nephew were here since Friday) for their last night here, I went upstairs to setup for my workout. That’s when I realized

  1. Switching weights would take significantly longer than I would want to — I have to unscrew the outside nut, switch the weights, replace nut, repeat 3 more times then
  2. Oops, I should have bought TWO pairs of 10s and TWO pairs of 2.5′s.. so that would have ended up costing me around $100… would the $50 savings worth the extra time EVERY workout switching out those weights 4 times? Bleh.

I ended up taking out the resistance bands and trying them but I didn’t like how they felt.. so I decided to switch my Rest Day and Circuit 1 this time and do my Circuit 1 at Chris’ (my boyfriend) every Monday through this phase. I did my Turbo Jam 20-minute (it was now 9:30p and the kids needed to be asleep and I’d be in their way) and called it a disappointed night.

The plan today was to take the kids to school, work a couple hours and head to Chris’ for my workout then shower and pick up my youngest, Max, from Kindergarten. On my way back home Chris messaged me about arranging a ride because his car broke down. Well, that ended up taking the entire morning (delay by the tow service) and by the time I dropped Chris off at work I would pick up my eldest just in time at 2 and I had a hair appointment at 3pm! Ugh! (And believe me, I was more than happy to help Chris out, he does more for me than I could ever ask for! <3)

So, it just goes to show life HAPPENS! Tonight I did the best I could for my workout given the circumstances, and actually gave both the bands and threaded dumb bells a chance…. Verdict: Don’t like ‘em! Hehe, I cannot find my receipt for the bands so I will keep them for other programs or for traveling, but I think I will either stick with working out at Chris’ or cough up the $150 (well, I’ll be returning these threaded pairs and weights tomorrow for $70). I wish I could return those bands because that would make the purchase difference only $50 rather than $80. Maybe I’ll try it, since I really just want to make an exchange, then I don’t have to rely on the unpredictable if I cannot make it to Chris’ house!

Anyway, I tried to do things slow and controlled, but overall it wasn’t challenging enough.  Here’s my stats.. my set of bands has three colors for light, medium, heavy (10, 15, 20 allegedly).  When I’d use the threaded bars, the bar itself is 4 lbs. + 2 5 lbs. weights each.

Exercise Weight Reps Notes
Sumo Squat with Hip Lift 14 lbs 12 Okay, could go up
Lunge with Posterior Fly Red 12 Okay, could not pull my arms up, wrists felt flimsy.
Push-Up with Leg Lift - 12 5 on toes, 7 knees
Dead Lift with Posterior Fly Red 12 Felt sloppy! :(
Lunge with Core Rotation 14 lbs 12 Good
Bench Press with Leg Lower 14 lbs 12 Good, will go 15 lbs.
Squat with Side Bend 14 lbs 12 Too easy, I didn’t have 20 as an option.
EXTREME Squats 14 lbs 3 Too easy, I didn’t have 20 as an option.
Forward-Lean Lunge with Dbl Arm Posterior Fly Red 12 Decent, but awkward in the wrists.
EXTREME Pushups - 3 Tough!
Chest Fly with Hip Lift 14 lbs 12 Ok, could go heavier

Even though I had marked many of the sets last week with upping the weights, I was DRIPPING sweat. I was sweating tonight but not as much… I’m still glad I got it done, and will work even harder tomorrow for Circuit 2! Maybe throw in a cardio session, too!

As Chalene says, “Move more and move on!”
